Recent research shows that the time children spend playing outdoors is decreasing. Outdoor play is increasingly being given less time, as children are occupied with school and various after-school activities. But it is actually through outdoor play that children learn and develop the most. Research conducted this year further gives us some more insights to the health benefits of playing outdoors.

"During outdoor play, children learn to communicate with their peers and they learn how to solve problems between them."

"A group of 73 toddlers were given sensors during outdoor play. This is the first time that the play behaviour of children has been recorded with data. The advantage is that the children were not hindered in their play by observing researchers in the schoolyard. The findings show that children who play in small groups for a longer period of time have deeper contacts with each other, are seen more as individuals and can be themselves without being immediately corrected."

Vitamin D and fresh air

A few advantages of outdoor play include the absorption of vitamin D, the development and practice of motor skills and being out in the fresh air. Recent research in China has shown that being outside is essential for proper eye development as well. The advice is for kids to get fresh air for at least two hours a day, so playing outside is always a good idea!

How-to-fall-lessons at school?

The Foundation Consumer and Safety in the Netherlands claims that outdoor play is essential for motor skills and it also helps you to learn how to fall. In recent years, the number of children left with injuries as a result of a fall has risen to 39,000. Figures show that as many as 3,000 children have to stay in hospital after a fall. This is most likely due to a more serious injury, such as a concussion or broken arm. In this training children learn that in the event of a fall, they should not stick their hands forward but instead keep them in front of their face. It is expected that the training will cut the number of injuries in half.

Physical benefits

Exercise ensures the healthy development of muscle strength, agility and flexibility. Not to mention that many children today are suffering from obesity. Playing, climbing, crawling, jumping, running, falling and getting up every day is important especially for kids. It is important today but also when kids grow up. Research has shown that children who exercise enough are at less of a risk for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis as well as weaker bones and immune system. So make sure your kids get their daily dose of outdoor play.

Reducing stress and boosting creativity

Children who struggle with concentration problems experience school in a more stressful way. Children with a lot of imagination and energy strive much better in an outdoor environment than indoors. Playing outdoors stimulates the development of natural creativity, but also reduces stress and helps to deal with stimuli better. Children can safely play outside in their own garden or in and around their Jungle Gym playground equipment.

Exercise and fresh air are good for the brain

Research has shown that kids who are active outdoors perform better in the areas of writing, mathematics, listening and critical thinking. The effects of exercise on the brain are necessary for the recovery and production of brain cells. During physical exertion, a particular brain cell is created that affects the memory system. These brain cells have a huge impact on childrens' ability to concentrate. Playing outside is very healthy and fun for children!

Sufficient daylight for the biological clock

Swinging back and forth, a million times off the slide or building sandcastles in the sandbox; whatever children do outside, they are exposed to daylight. The absorption of sufficient daylight is important for the eating and sleeping cycle.

How to get your kids outside?

Creating a play area in the garden (small or large) is a good first step. Think about creative games in and around the Jungle Gym climbing frame, give them a push on the swing or catch the kids coming off the slide. You can always renew the playtower with accessories or attach a new module to it. Play the game Tic-Tac-Toe together, arrange transport to the top with the Bucket or you can communicate with each other via the Talking Tube.
